The CBR file format is used to store and view comic book or graphic novel files on ereaders. The full name is Comic Book RAR Archive file. CBR files include images of all the different panels that make up the comic or graphic novel, as well as metadata. This metadata includes instructions to the ereader to display the panels in the correct order (especially useful for manga), and other functions like indexing and bookmarking. The images in the file are also compressed to save file-storage space.
You can read a CBR comic file using Calibre or a specific digital comic book viewer like eComic, CDisplayEx, or Gonvisor. If you need to extract any of the individual comic panels, you would need to decompress the file first. CBR files can also be included in a CBC file as part of a comic collection in Calibre.
PDF stands for ‘Portable Document Format’ file. It was developed by Adobe so people could share documents regardless of which device, operating system, or software they were using, while preserving the content and formatting. The format has evolved to allow for editing and interactive elements like electronic signatures or buttons. The PDF format is now a standard open format that isn’t just available under Adobe Acrobat. It is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).
